Anyone know where I might find some simple 6mm boats? I want them for looks, but they might also work for small scale crossing actions. Or any tutorials on making some? I took a stab at it but it was not my thing, I can only do right angle work as with buildings for some reason. Bruce

I checked - Irregular do have a small range of genergy boats including small rowing boats in 6mm. Given your current interest they alas have some ACW ironclads etc and a balloon.

Great! Thanks Prof. I missed the row boats when I checked Irregular. No pic of them, only saw the sailboat. And an ironclad or two would be fun indeed - I had not thought about them at all.
The balloon thing has always interested me. The French had one at Fleury, apparently, but for some reason Napoleon ended the balloon service early on. Not sure why - his "telegraph" signaling system was so creative, why not balloons?
Thaddeus Lowe's balloons actually did serve with the Union army in the ACW and did contribute artillery spotting and intelligence reports in several early battles. But Lowe was driven out of the army by politics before he really got established. Too bad - I don't think any army had the weapons to reach balloons at height behind the line in either era. I am going to order one just to see it on the table! We are all actually looking down from balloon height on our troops all the time! Bruce

H&R's pontoon boats may also work.

Egads!! I bought some of these years ago, they are French figs, but never painted them and they disappeared into the "To Be Painted" box, which is full of stuff I cannot recall even buying! Thanks for this David! Bruce

There was indeed a balloon at Fleury which was towed round the battle field by a great gang of infantry hanging onto long ropes. The balloon Corps was a properly constituted unit of the Army of Egypt (it even went through a uniform change) but alas its aircraft went down with the French fleet at Aboukir bay. I have a couple of balloons nevertheless for my 18mm Egyptian campaign. One I scratch built, the other is a rather glorious Montgolfier style sample three d printed by a company in Barcelona for 28mm but works well with 18s (these balloons were big things). Balloons required a lot of logistically support, notmleast a mobile hydrogen plant, so I suspect they were thought to be too much effort for the return.

Perhaps, but with hindsight I think it would have been worth it. The mobile hydrogen issue was a factor, inflation time was slow.
In the ACW, Lowe did make several important observations that were of great value to the Union army. His very accurate estimates of the size of the rebel armies in the Peninsula campaign conflicted with McClellan's own paranoid guesses, as well as Pinkerton's spies. He was able to warn formations about approaching forces that would have otherwise been unseen. But he contracted malaria in Virginia and was out for a while. He did return for a couple of battles but Army and Congressional politics wrested control of the balloon corps from him and he gave in. The army then let the corps fade away.
However, during the war he did meet and offer advice and information to a certain German observer, Count Von Zeppelin.
Now to make up a balloon for the table. Very unique. Great idea, Prof! Bruce
