I found this product while trying to figure out how to lay down some grids on a 6x4 piece of blue marine vinyl for a naval game. Hex grids. These are transparent overlays! The long overdue product that lets you convert any surface to a grid. Hexes or squares, white or black lines, various size hexes, various size overlays. Clear plastic, flexible, and you can write all over them using markers as they erase easily. Like my vinyl mats, they allow you to slide you bases during movement easily, speeding up the game with less wear and tear on your figs. If you want to go old school or just makes things easier and less fiddly on yourself and your friends, grids are a great way to go, and with the overlays you can grid or ungrid at will while getting to use your favorite gaming mats. I go back and forth with grids, always use them for my traveling games, and they are great for newcomers to the hobby. Sometimes I just need to make things simple. People have been looking for this type of thing for at least 10 years. Seemed so simple, but now it's here.

Well my transparent hex gird overlay arrived from Tablewars. This is the company that makes FAT mats - high quality terrain mats for gaming. Service was excellent.
However..... the surface of this plastic overlay is much more shiny than I anticipated. For naval games, this is not necessarily a drawback - water is wet and er...shiny. But this material is very shiny, more shiny than I personally would have liked. The white hex grids were very bright looking when I laid this down over my blue/gray ocean mat - perhaps the black line option would have been better.
Since you can mark up this material with almost anything and wipe it clean, I am experimenting with brushing on some acrylic craft paint to tone it down and add some effects. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a clear overlay to use over any mat though. I plan to make this work somehow, especially since it can be painted, marked up etc and still wipe clean. For me, it was not the big breakthrough that I had been looking for. Oh well! Bruce

That's a shame Bruce I was going to suggest a coat of matt varnish but it probably wouldn't stick to it anyway.
