So, I just bought a bunch of Bavarians to make a reasonably sized force, part of my upcoming replay of the year 1809. And down the road for 1813.
Can an anyone give me some impressions about these guys other than what's on Wikipedia? Any heroes? Any outstanding units or special talents? Anybody actually have a Bavarian army?
I have barely given them a thought before and their only vaguely familiar general, Wrede, seems to have not done well vs Napoleon. Bruce

They generally didn't do too bad against the Austrians in early 1809,but then they were defending their territory. Wrede was so-so at best. Not sure about the other commanders.

Assuming that the French, Russian, British, Austrian, and Prussian are the most essential armies, who else did the most fighting and are useful to have? Perhaps some French allies like the Swiss? The Poles? Bruce

Apart from the Bavarians, who were in involved in all campaigns except Spain and 1806,fighting against Napoleon from late 1813. There are certainly the Poles (everywhere from 1808 onwards), but also the Italians - again in every campaign in reasonable numbers. Saxony shouldn't be overlooked either, up to 1806 against Napoleon, then with until late 1813, although you'll need two versions to reflect the uniform changes in 1808. Saxon cavalry was among the best.

It's interesting to see which nations are available from different manufacturers. I did not check Adler, but I did not find a number of the countries you mentioned at H&R or Baccus. But I imagine there are enough similarities with available figs to adjust the paint job accordingly.
And this is where the ESR campaign guide uniform reference section would be handy, Bruce

Yes, I believe all manufacturers do Polish figures. As for Italian and Saxon - basically French figures for both infantry and cavalry, painted accordingly. For Saxon pre 1808 (as for Hesse as well), use 1806 Prussian painted accordingly (British fusiliers for pre 1808 Saxon grenadiers). They all work a treat. Must get some photos on here to illustrate!
