Just curious once again ... are you more of a gamer or a painter? What kind of balance between the two do people maintain? Bruce

Mainly a gamer when I can now - although always amazed at how much painting I find to do! A result of enthusiastic buying a few years ago!

There is a certain balance to seek here, I think. As I spent more time on this forum, I began to raise the level of my painting, and really spent some time on my buildings in particular. I was getting more fussy with my figs too.
With H&R, I think You do have the option to paint a little faster and skip some detail without too much impact from gaming distance. I have reached a point where I want my armies done so I can go ahead and play. I also bought a large amount of figures to paint so I could stage nearly any battle, with several countries to chose from.
So now I am beginning to plan a painting scheme that will let me paint more figs in less time and still keep an acceptable level of appearance. I decided I would rather skip a step or too than never finish. Bruce

I wish I could do that Bruce, if there is detail there I have to paint it!

I know that feeling Tim! And with you painting Adlers it is especially strong, I imagine. There is artistry there that is its own reward. That is one side of the balance between painting and gaming.
As I get ready to try speed painting, I am telling myself I can come back later and add detail if I want to. I have stopped sealing my figures anyway without any real consequences so far.
And I think we all want tables that look good in action. But time is flying by and I want to play Leipzig! Bruce

I must admit I am hooked on painting and as you implied Bruce Adlers have a wealth of detail. My aim is to deploy nicely painted figures on good terrain, Peter Gilder style. I will have to limit the size of my battles if I am realistic.

I only do the odd solo game and I've come to the conclusion that for me it's the research and painting that is the bigger pleasure. when I do have a game I tend to do historic battles or scenarios very close to them and thing hard about setting the Black Powder command values to reflect the characteristics of the historic generals and armies - this also helps to reduce my control over both forces of course - this seems to work well and although it means, for example, when fighting the GNW my all-cavalry Polish army has a habit of simply trotting off the table it does enforce authentic tactics and sometimes eerily reflects key events - in my refight of St Privat, the French Guard wouldn't move when the Prussian advance faltered. But, basically, I'm a painter!
