My understanding is that the Russian green uniform color was rather dark, almost black. But I am thinking to lighten them for our scale to help them stand out. Any color suggestions?
Hundreds of cross belts - ugh! Bruce

Vallejo flat green would be a good choice Bruce.

So many Vallejo greens! Do you mean the Russian green, Tim? I was afraid it was too dark to be easily seen even though it is historically correct based on my limited knowledge of the Russian army. I have been painting Austrians and French for 6 years, I have about 1000 Russians to start on now and I am just realizing I don't know enough! Bruce

No Bruce, they make a green called flat green(number 70.968) which is a good general purpose dark/mid green. The Russian green is for tanks I think.

This looks just right Tim, enough green to see it on the table. Thanks for this! Bruce

Bruce, I have just had the same problem with some 95th Rifles in 15/18mm. I went with the prescribed colour green and just about got away with it but to my mind could have done with a shade lighter. Piccie here: link

Very nice! I see what you mean.
The old rule of thumb to lighten uniform colors for the smaller scales makes to me if done with care, but there is a certain anxiety for me about choosing colors when starting a new army.
Given the nature of dyes then, campaign fading and battle conditions, I suppose there is some flexibility in deciding on colors. I have always wondered how the Austrians felt about all that white as they snail marched along a dusty or muddy road, or went about their routine activities, waiting for the advent of washing machines and stain removers. The green of the 95th must have been darker than the standard Russian uniform as in the Crimea Russian sources reported riflemen in black. On unpredictable colours: the Bavarians had a victory parade - in 1871 ?- wearing violet after a dye job misfired.

Yikes! Sounds ... er, festive! Already, I am having a little trouble with Russian green and French dark blue being close, next come the Prussians and I realize that good lighting on the table is essential! Bruce
