So, having just returned to the hobby after 20 years or so out and this my first attempt at painting at this scale: the 28th Foot at 1:10 figure ratio. Overall I'm pretty pleased with them, although there are some things I've learned along the way, which should improve things going forwards. In particular I'm not pleased with the basing finish, so may redo this. I also may do some slightly bigger flags, as I think they look nicer even if they aren't historically correct. These were painted using a black undercoat - my first time not using white. It's quite helpful for the dark recesses and splitting colours but would using white make the colours stand out more? I've seen that some other people use a nut brown wash. Is this over base colours applied onto a white undercoat? Would people recommend it? All advice would be welcomed! I have several thousand more to paint, so have room to practice! Oh and sorry about the yellowy photos. Need better lighting... cheers Mike

Very nice indeed, lots of detail- well done! You are off to a great start.
I start everything off with white undercoat for my H&R infantry as they are smaller and don't gain much from black or ink wash. Cavalry and cannon get a black undercoat because of the added details and their size. Black for my Leven buildings, which are often then dry brushed. Some folks here swear by nut brown wash for figures and buildings, I have had trouble getting the hang of it. It does seem to me that some light colors may not be as true over a black undercoat after they dry.
i think most of us experiment and check out tutorials, blogs etc. but it's also a matter of personal preference and style. Considering the number of troops you are going to paint, your technique will evolve.
it looks a bit like your bases are flocked with a fall seasonal mix. Maybe something more neutral, a little less thick, and blending with some colors on your table?
There are a LOT of excellent painters here who may chime in with more expertise. Bruce

Looking really nice! I use black undercoat and then paint with colours slightly lighter than the IRL colour - but I'm no expert. The important thing I think when painting 6mm is to "paint the unit" rather than the individual figure. I use slightly bigger flags on those units whose IRL flags appear in my opinion to be too small. I would suggest having a look at the Baccus Basing System. I think it works very well with 6mm, especially the short strand flock. www.baccus6mm.com/catalogue/Basesandbasingmaterials/BasingMaterials///Keith

Thanks both. Will be having an experiment I think, trying out white undercoats (with and without washes) and using lighter colours on black or grey, just to see how ot looks. On basing I'll have another try. I actually did quite a nice earth effect in the Baccus style but it's covered by my autumn fall flock which just didn't work. I found the glue ran too much. Will have another go with the Baccus grass but applied in a much more limited way. Thanks again!
