Am I mad?

So, I've decided to get back into Napoleonic wargaming after a 20-odd year absence, although now at 6mm level. I want the visual effect of both large units and lots of them. The problem is that I'm a lot more anal than I used to be and I can't stop obsessing about finding the perfect figure ratio to allow me to (a) represent both broadly the right number of troops for all Hundred Days units; and (b) show company structure accurately in the basing. So this is leading me down the path of 1:10 scale, even though it'll be expensive and mean I'm painting for ever. Not to mention the fact that it won't work for lots of rules!
Am I mad?
Worth mentioning that I'm not interested in battalion or brigade level basing, as I don't think the feel is right for Napoleonics. I want formations, even at this scale. Any suggestions for rules that'll tick all my boxes?
Thanks muchly
Mike

Mike
I started by using the old Ebb & Flow rules, 2 bases per battalion. Since then I've changed my basing depending on the rules, put simply having a brain fart a couple of times a year. I now gone back to 50 x 50mm or 50 x 30mm bases, for brigades, based on both FPGA and the Paintingshed 3.0 rules. Have a look at the Paintshed (painting shed site, good looking bases. I can also use the bases on Command & Colours Napoleonic.

Just as I posted that I started thinking about Ebb & Flow again.

Scott bowden has released a set of rules that operates at battalion level. Design for battalion on battalion or regt battles. We are looking at that for or 28mm group as something new.

Welcome Señor, no more mad than the rest of us! More power to you for seeking this holy grail of combining small and grand tactical scope in a campaign project.
You might have a look at Lasalle or March Attack for rules ideas. They are solid games, and might be adapted to your needs. That said, using 10mm for this project sounds daunting. Are you sure you can't go with 6mm? Bruce

Well I'm base as brigade level which yes when you put a division on the table looks a little bit puny but I'm now upto to corps which works out at 62 infantry brigades, 9 cavalry and 20 artillery, now that on a table looks a little more formidable. At this scale I can paints units quickly which is good as I'm collecting Wagram 'am I mad' 😊

Hi, as Bruce rightly says: no madder than the rest of us. I got back into Napoleonics after 40 years and chose 6mm because I like the big armies you can build up as much as anything else. I noted the whole basing thing had come up while I was away, as it were, and decided to ignore it as my old Grandad ignore decimal coinage when it came in. So I simply went to Black Powder where there are no basing requirements. As for units I have rather gone for number of units rather than figure scale so when I did a complete Waterloo I did it by using one stand to represent 3 units and painting the most interesting one.

Hi folks. Thanks for the earlier advice. I've taken the plunge with 6mm and have now painted up my first battalion at 1:10 figure ratio. So for British line, 5 x 12 figures bases. I may end up doing 1:12.5 ratio though, with 4 of the 12 man bases instead. This'll just reduce the painting requirement and unit frontages a bit. The 60 man units do look good though! Some pics are in the gallery section. I'm pleased with them for a first go - although have more to learn.
Anyway, I've made a start! Thanks for the help and welcome.
cheers

Now slightly less mad I would say! 6mm is sometimes referred to as "God's scale" here, so you are only as mad as we are. I think you have made the right choice for the scope of your project and you will enjoy the sense of massed forces that 6mm is known for. Bruce

Hi Mike! I have most of my Napoleonic infantry with 4 bases per unit and each base has 16 figures formed in two rows. That gives me 64 figures per unit which does IMHO look good! //Keith

Thanks a lot gents.
Oh and Keith, your figures were actually a big source of inspiration. I had intended to go with multiple bases but was having a wobble after getting lots of advice to go with battalion basing. However, your stuff helped convince me to go with my gut. So thanks!
Cheers
