Welcome smudger! You have come to the right place - there are a lot of members who are glad to help. You will notice we have our favorite armies and battles listed which may influence our replies. I favor the Austrians because they fought in so many battles, so there are lots of historical scenarios to choose from - and their uniforms are white! I don't think this makes them that much easier to paint, but I thought so when I first started!
There are three major manufacturers of 6mm, Adler, Baccus, and Heroics & Ros. They are all good, its down to personal taste. H&R are really 5.5mm and they are the oldest company. Very wide selection, very affordable. Baccus and Adler are great looking figures and probably have the most fans here. They are wonderful to paint and the people here do amazing work with them. There are others, including Boki, who posts here.
Leven Miniatures and Total Battle Miniatures are great for buildings and accessories. Timecast also, but more expensive. And of course Perfect Six Scenics for some really cool accessories.
There are a ton of rules. They range in scope from small to grand tactical. I own way too many. But I think Neil Thomas's Napoleonic Wargaming is a good place to start. The rules are well thought out and easy to learn. From there you can branch out almost endlessly. Currently, I would suggest March Attack for tactical and Blucher for grand tactical if you want to throw yourself into more complex games, but there are many great games to choose from, including Champ d honneur, from Suchet who also posts here.
Be sure to check out all the threads for more detailed discussions on these matters! Bruce

Welcome to the forum Smudger! Another thing to consider is, are there any other wargamers near you and what setups are they using for rules etc. Not a problem if you are intending to build 2 or more armies of course or if you want to play solo.

Thanks for all your comments,I suppose the first thing to do is figure out base sizes although I suspect these will be different for each rule set?I shall eventually be doing 2 armies.im leaning towards Austrian first then French.i

Those forces will give you a good balanced fight and cover alot of historical battles/campaigns.
Basing is the gamers nightmare. There are a number of rule sets now which are using measure units taken as your base frontage. So it doesn't mater on the base size you have as it plays using any size bases. I believe blucher has a system like this. I made a post a while back on base sizes. Look it up it might help.
So are you planning on solo/only playing with your armies or part of a games club? Where are you based?

Right ooiittee - Blucher and LaSalle both suggest a base measurement range - you decide on a size, then use whatever your base frontage is as the game's unit of measurement. These are Sam Mustafa rules, but there are others that do this. ooiittee's basing thread on this forum drew a lot of discussion and ideas.
If you are a solo player or just want to experiment, you might try the following, which I do to try different rule sets. Get some sheets of thin craft foam, which you can get in many colors, cut to any size bases you want with scissors, put some two-sided cello tape on em. Stick on some strips of figures, and you can move your practice bases per various rules and see how it goes. I also stick my figure strips to some thin felt covered card stock which has a sticky side, You just cut to size, peel away the paper on the sticky side, and stick on whatever formation you want. This felt base works especially well for moving on vinyl game mats and speeds things along. Anyway some sort of temporary basing lets you experiment. Craft stores have all kinds of stuff.
I am always fooling around with rules as a solo player, so I avoid the nightmare by keeping some forces to temp mount - someday I may actually settle on one set of rules. Bruce

I'm based just outside Stoke but am willing to travel for regular games,I'll opt for a base size that allows me to create little dioramas on each base.ive an idea of creating a universal type basing system like a kind of square polo mint.I also make mdf scenery for larger scales so I'll be putting the laser cutter to good use lol. Cheers for all the help so far Austrians it is and I think Napoleonic Wargaming may well be the rule set I start with.

Smudger
Welcome to the forum. As ooiittee said 2 good armies. I had the same idea, then all of a sudden appear to have all the major and some minor protagonists. More lead than I'll ever paint I think.

Neil Thomas rules are a great intro , I still play them regularly. A number of posts are on the forums talking about expanding them. It's good also in that it allows you to contain the army size you field. Later then you can adopt the rule changes we discuss and expand your armies to play historical battle and campaigns.

I am biased as all get out but I'd encourage you to take a look at Et sans résultat! (ESR) from The Wargaming Company (http://thewargamingcompany.com/etsansresultat/basics.html).
