We are building a new house and I will finally have a wargames room of my own. This has led me to think about how I want my new table to look. The options are:
A cloth that drapes over terrain. A modular table with integrated hills and rivers. A flat table that has separate hills and rivers placed on top.
Then the next issue is whether the surface is textured/ has relatively deep flock and static grass/ teddy bear fur or go with a relatively untextured surface so that figures don't look like they are floating on top of the grass.
Should hills be realistic slopes, or more abstract contours/ stepped hills like on a topographical map?
For 28mm I would go plush grass, realistic hills, recessed rivers etc, but 6mm are a little different and that approach may not be best.
Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I have gone through a number of blogs and discussions, but still can't decide. Still, it may be that I will not need a table. My interest in wargaming has waned dramatically in the last few months. This might just be due to being in a tiny rental and not really being able to do any painting /terrain construction and that my usual wargames opponent has also just moved into a new house and hasn't had time to play. Currently I feel wargaming is possibly just a waste of time and I should spend more time running, at the gym, cooking and drinking wine.

I understand the need for space. Building terrain takes up so much space.
I also have come back from a 15 year game break. I think it comes down to what you play and who your playing. Take the time to really understand what it is your bothered about so your gaming brothers (and sisters) can suggest some solutions.

Here's a picture of the start of my table inside my gaming room. The table is 6' x 9' on wheels so I can move it around the room. You can also see I added storage under the tabletop. I set the table top about 2" below the rim. I then added a layer of carpet padding then my wife found them foam squares. I can add built up areas under the gaming Matt. Here's a final picture of the completed table and gaming room. Let me know if you have any questions, Dale

This looks very inviting! The wheels are a particularly great idea, and with the table having room to be situated however you want. Well done. Bruce

I wish I had thought of the wheels idea when I built mine as well

It depends on how much storage space you have; if you have sh*tloads then maybe modular boards could be the way forward. However, if you are stuck for space -and remember terrain takes up a fair amount of space- you could go with boards that can be stacked. I made my table from textured insulation boards and if you are interested I have documented the way I made them on my blog: thewordsofsubedai.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Generic%20terrainAll my terrain pieces are of the sit-on-top variety and everything I make or paint has the same coloured and textured bases for ease of compatibility. Again, various examples are shown on my blog and elsewhere.

You can still drink wine, just like Napoleon and everybody else did. You have a unique opportunity to have a custom space and campaign to your heart's content, re-live the era, ponder the what ifs, honor the armies, and share and learn. Many of us are solo players. I came back for some escape from work stress, and now I now longer worry about anything! Not even the bills for all this wargame stuff or anything my wife says. War has brought me peace at last! My question is , I want it the room the table looks great ! Do you ship ? Sorry Richard, it was fun to build the table and room... Once. I finished the bathroom in the basement first, then gaming room, just finishing the hallway and then hope to finish my sons room while he is at college. When we had the hose built, we had the contractor only rough finish the basement.
