Some advice please. I am about to tackle the Leven Hougoumont model and plan to base this on a 30cm x 20cm 2mm thick MDF base and also to model the formal garden and woods and base these on 2mm thick MDF bases' also. My question is: What's the best way of stopping large bases such as these from wsrping? I seem to remember reading somewhere that varnishing the MDF first was advised. Geoff

My advice would be to use plywood instead of MDF and even with ply I would treat the bottom surface the same as you do the top, so if you paint one side, paint the other as well, that will minimise the problem.

Ok that sounds good , I have 5 a4 sheets of ply on order but they are 3mm thick, so I was going to sand the edges to give a thinner edge!

Exactly what I am going to do Richard. In theory a chamfered edge should help a bit with warping issues as well as the bottom surface will be slightly larger than the top. Thinking about it, if you are glueing the whole of Hougount onto the board it should act as a frame and stop any warping. Personally I won't be fixing them on 'cos I can use the buildings for other projects.

I based my two Leven Hugo's on 3mm MDF, no treatment and no warping but I used Masonry Paint and sand on the board

Just a note to say thank you to all those who responded to my question. The advice has been useful. The 2mm MDF boards were purchased through e-bay.I will use these to make up some of my usual 120mm scenic boards and have ordered some 2mn plywood boards from e-bay for the Hougoumont project. I will paint these both sides as advised. Geoff

only just noticed this thread. I use plasticard for my buildings, generally 2mm thick. While I plan to reduce the wall lengths for Hougoumont there are still a lot of buildings and so will have to see!

I used 3mm MDF as I thought 2mm may be a little lightweight for all that resin.
