Thought I would post a review of the varnish brands im using , not the most thrilling of subjects but an essential process in all miniature painting. These are the current brands I'm using and a figure I be using them on for this review. Vallejo premium airbrush gloss varnish 62.064 and The army painter anti-shine matt varnish. Vallejo premium airbrush gloss varnish 62.064. Although this says airbrush on the bottle it can be brushed on, wich is the easier method with 6mm it's very easy to apply and drys to a very strong gloss Finish, I don't think you can go wrong with this it is so easy to apply, drys within minutes but takes around 12 hours to fully cure and it is tough it passed the scratch drop and rub test without leaving any marks on the figures. So a good all rounder. The army painter anti shine matt varnish. To me this is the holy grail of matt varnish. And I have tried lots of different brands over the years, I use two coats of this the first undiluted the second watered down with a 50/50 ratio. Very simple to apply one bottle will enough for well over 1000 figures at 6mm scales and can be picked up for less then £3 a bottle. To me this is a must have, the matt finish is perfect it doesant seem to lose any colour on the miniature and cures after 12 hours to a very durable top coat. Hope this is of some use. Richard

I use the spray version of the anti-shine on my tanks as it removes the shiny bits from applying washes. Nice to know the bottles variety works well as spry is not great even for 10mm figures. will definitely get some of this next time I am in the shop in town. Will probably try out the gloss varnish too

Good info, thanks. I use Future floor polish for gloss coat then finish with Testors dullcote. The Future is also great for getting washes to work well. It's super tough. Dilute to taste with water.
Will try the army painter matt i think. I have also used Vallejo matt varnish which looks dead matt when it goes on but seems to get a sheen to it over time

M

I have always wanted to try testors dullcote but find it very hard to obtain in the u.k, and I have read the EU have made them remove some of the ingredients before it can be sold over here making it not as good as it once was, much like creosote thanks EU!!
