Hi, I'm new to Naps. and have a simple question. I've read that both iron and brass were used for artillery. How do I know which one was used for French and Brit?
Thanks,
Joe

Brass was rarely used, it is a soft metal and it quickly wears out. Guns referred to as brass are actually bronze cannon. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, sometimes with arsenic. Bronze will oxidize to a green color which is a copper oxide. It can be polished to a bright yellow to copper color depending on the mix of the alloy.

As far as I know (could be wrong of course) the French used bronze barrels and the British a mixture of bronze and Iron. Iron barrels would have been painted black to stop rusting. All armies would of course use captured ordinance so anything goes really.

My French guns are bronze and the British black.
