Here are some pics from my ACW Bull Run refight. H&R figures, rules are modified Volley and Bayonet, really turning into my own with some quirky house rules cropping up for solo play. The Bull Run scenario for V&B was very helpful, thanks Keith. I realize that this post should be in the Other Interests section, but that means it can only be seen by members logging in and I think that its better to have it more accessible.
The opening battle of the war involved two green armies unable to even get all of their units into the battle.
Here is Howard's brigade arriving at Sudley Springs ford, part of what was supposed to be a flanking movement in real life, but fooling nobody. The road will take them on to the hill where the Stone House is, and beyond, Henry House Hill. The Rebels are converging at the same time on the same area per the arrival schedule.
Richardson is ordered to hold the famous Stone Bridge over Bull Run - this is the line of communication and supply back to Washington. The padded tweezers allow for easy movement and handling of stands on the magnetic bases. I remove stands, knock them over as casualties, have them run, change formation, etc.
Sherman's Brigade gets clobbered assaulting Matthews Hill, but on the Confderate side, Bee and Bartow are also thrown to the ground beyond and cannot get to Henry House Hill as they did in the historical battle. This means Bee will never get to say "There stands Jackson like a stone wall!" creating that most iconic & inspirational nickname. But Bee may have been remarking on Jackson not coming to his aid. Since he was killed in the battle, we never found out.
Soon, things are heating up near the Stone House and Henry House beyond as troops arriving from both sides converge on this point.
Jackson does arrive and gets into position for some serious standing. But the Federals are not getting the good rolls, and the brigades wrecked in the Matthews Hill assault are sorely missed.
Finally, Early's Brigade arrives, coming up from the Chinn House, and this makes the difference. Heavy casualties force a Union withdrawal as the game ends.
In real life the Federals fled, crowding across the Stone Bridge and running back to Washington. There were some pivotal moments up on Henry Hill, including the Union artillery holding their fire when approached by Rebels dressed in blue uniforms - the uniforms for the South would never truly be standardized. And the steadiness of Jackson was critical in this fight. I did not allow any melee action as the units engaged in some pretty close firefights but not much hand to hand I think. Not much different than a Napoleonic battle in some ways, Bruce
