G'day All Just wondering if anyone has played the Perry's Travel Battle game? I managed to get my hands on the game about 2 weeks ago. If so how did you find the rules? In fact any type of gridded rule information / feedback would be great. I just purchased a gridded 4'x3', 75mm gridded mat, to use with miniatures, using the Travel Battle / gridded rules. I've decided no more measuring if I can help it, making my life easier and getting back to fun games with squares and hexagons. Hi Mike: I love grids, use them all the time with my own custom version of Neil Thomas rules. I think this must go back to playing my first wargame, Avalon Hill Gettysburg. It was a great way to learn about flanks, enfilade, etc. A while ago I posted a thread here on playing grid based rules. I think there are some pics as well. There is also a post somewhere here for my own traveling game, using 3mm armies and a grid Chessex 2x2 mat. I also recommend the Vintage Wargaming blog, I reviewed it here under the Review section. Bob Cordury is the author of The Portable Wargame, which I may have reviewed as well.
I discovered Bob while researching my travel game a while ago. I do not know the Perry rules. But in general, grid rules combine some of the attributes of board games with miniatures, which I think the Perrys wanted to do. And I really enjoy the easy maneuvering, precise and instantaneous info about distance, position, terrain, etc. There is the diagonal movement issue, but IMO it's adequately dealt with by adjusting the movement allowance. I have 4 large Chessex Battlemats, each 3 x 4, which I have dry brushed to give them a varied appearance. They have 1 inch squares which is what I use. They are hex on the reverse side. They are fantastic for easy setup and convenient play. I love vinyl mats because it's so easy to slide bases around the table without handling them and very speedy.
Maybe be you can let us know more about the Perry rules as you go along. Keep us posted. Bruce

G'day Bruce
Thanks for the feedback and pointing me in the right direction. I believe I may have seen something regarding Neil Thomas and his rules (I do have a copy of his Napoleonic Wargaming), including the 1 hours wargaming.
Can you remember when you posted your thread regarding grid based rules, I'll have a good look at it.
A mate and I are looking ECW on grids using the new ECW rules from to the strongest.
I also read an article regarding diagonal movement not long ago, but will case that down again.
Regarding your Chessex mats. I bought the same two sized mats myself early in the year, to use with my 2mm Napoleonic and ECW armies, C&C for the Hex and Travel Battle for the grids.
Regards
Mike

Excellent! The Chessex mats are really the way to go for grids, I think. And To the Strongest are a good match.
I just don't find the diagonal movement discrepancy worth worrying about. There are so many descrepancies in all rules and there are always compromises. In the end you want a good game. You might want to have a look at an older set of grid rules called The Age of Napoleon, written by Dale Hurtt. Among other things it has some excellent charts showing fields of fire and flank positions for grids. The appropriate squares are shaded to show you weather the defender is within range and field of fire regardless of whether either side is facing diagonally or straight ahead. Also cover flanking positions. Makes engagement very clear and you can adjust the range to your rules. I can PM you a copy if you are interested. Bruce
