I recently discovered the scenario work of Michael Hopper. He is in the process of publishing or has published an ongoing series of scenario books that are very much worthy of our attention. Here is a link to a description of two of the four books for 1809, Dual of the Princes and Eagles Over Bavaria. thepeninsularwar.blogspot.com/2017/12/review-eagles-over-bavaria-duel-of.html
I have these first two in the 1809 series, with the second two new releases on order. Together, they provide excellent scenario info for dozens of battles, small and large, including an entire detailed volume on the Eugene vs John campaign, not a typical offering. Some of the combats are small scale and include some fascinating maps and objectives, you feel very much immersed in the era following along with these. Each of the four books has 18 scenarios with detailed maps, OOBs, lots of info, excellent research. Organized to give a wonderful campaign feel for all of 1809, perhaps my favorite period. These four books with 72 scenarios really give me a narrative to follow.
These scenarios are non specific as to rules and the maps are workable for converting to different scales. I like that some big battles are split into two scenarios, either by representing different parts of the field, or by morning and afternoon scenarios. Very manageable and playable. A great resource.
Check out the link for a visual, goggle the books to see more. You have to do a little research to check these out. This is a one man operation, although with world-wide play tester support, and a labor of love. You order directly from Michael, who lives in Canada, service is excellent. $34.00 US for each book, plus postage. log1cal.mh@gmail.com
I would be remiss not to mention the great scenario work being done by David Esteness at The Wargaming Company. www.thewargamingcompany.com/
A much larger operation than Michael Hopper’s, this is the home of Et Sans Resultat rules, sells miniature figures and buildings, and has been putting out a series of lovely campaign scenario books. These are also very well done, contain detailed uniform guides, and the full color maps look very much like war game tables. Can be used with any rules, with a campaign game structure to follow. Just some beautiful work. There are fewer scenarios in the TWC books than in Hopper’s. At $60.00 each, I have hesitated to try these after buying the two editions of ESR. A personal budget thing. But….that leads me to a central point…
These guys are doing great stuff, although I could go broke buying all these. But the cost reflects the marketplace for this high level of work in our hobby. It is not cheap to produce these books, Michael in particular has done everything he can to cut costs but not quality - outstanding work. David is a stand up, supportive guy who has been building a business, he is also very committed to service and quality.
I don’t think either one of these guys thinks he will get rich quick doing this. They charge what they have to, and the work from both speaks to their passion and commitment. I have done business with both and we are lucky to have them. Bruce
