After posting a report recently on my Caldiero 1805 refight, I wondered if any one else had any smaller, somewhat obscure battles they have found to be of interest for gaming. I also have done Elchingen from this period. Before this I did Lindenau, really a part of Leipzig but sets up nicely as its own Corps vs Corps game with clear and vital objectives.
Any others? Bruce

There are some others that took place in a similar area to Caldiero - only four years later. A good mini campaign, with several scenarios can be found in the battles of Piave, Sacile, Soave etc in 1809. The French/Allied army led by Eugene de Beauharnais and the Austrians under Archduke John. Armies of about 70,000 apiece, with lots of manouver, so plenty of scope. A good opportunity to give the Italians a run out, plus loads of Landwehr for the Austrians.
Extending the campaign as Eugene followed John into Hungary also provides the opportunity to introduce hordes of Insurrection troops into John's army. The battle of Raab is also handy if you have a model of the granary at Essling as there was a virtually identical one at Raab!

Brilliant! Thanks, David. I have been reading up on these battles and it does make a great campaign. Just the right size, and fought over some of the same terrain as in 1796 and 1805. I did a refight of Raab on a large table a couple of years ago and found that the fortified farmhouse near the center of the Austrian line was a dramatic highlight. The actual building you reference still stands today. Lots of interesting units.
And I wonder if Archduke John might be a little more competent than he gets credit for, he was only 18 when he at least nominally commanded at Hohenlinden and took the blame. He seems to have been intelligent with leadership ability, at least as time went on, and fought the 1809 campaign pretty competitively.
Until he was late for Wagram, which made him a handy scapegoat, since he probably would not have made enough difference. He apparently did not get on well with his brother in any case. Nothing moved slower than an Austrian army, as Charles himself well knew. Bruce
