A couple of photos from this evenings 1813 game using Volley & Bayonet. Ney, commanding two Corps, attempted to attack along a long ridge line, while pressing the Austrian left flank. The Austrians, like the French, were not concentrated and various divisions were thrown forward piecemeal to strengthen positions or restrict French deployment which was hampered by woods. The Austrian counter-attacks in the centre and Leighton were doggedly thrown back. Above, Austrians have advance on their left against the French right where they hoped to contain the French. Below French left visible holding the ridge line just before the Grenadiers surged forward. Here the French left would come under Austrian attack, initially by Austrian infantry using their superior firepower, and later by an Austrian Grenadier Division. Here, two French brigades has just delivered an attack on the Austrian defenders. When the Austrian Grenadiers did occur it was fortunately thrown back. The village in the right was held by Austrian Grenzers and proved particularly frustrating to the French attacking along the ridge. After six hours night intervened allowing both armies to finally disengage.

Lovely as always, and fun to read. Forgive me if you already have mentioned this, but what size are your bases? Bruce

Lovely as always, and fun to read. Forgive me if you already have mentioned this, but what size are your bases? Bruce Just a short summary this time, but some form of post to this forum. The bases are 1 1/2” square for massed infantry and cavalry. The artillery are half the width so 3/4” in width but still 1 1/2 deep.

Thank you and I apologize for making you repeat yourself. My H&R figures are already based 1.5 in wide for infantry, .75 for cavalry and artillery, stands and bases are magnetic. Not as deep as yours. I have been looking into V&B and have seen references to 3x3 bases. I know you have adjusted the scale. Much obliged, Bruce

It isn’t a problem at all Bruce.
Last night’s opponents has his Austrians on magnetic bases. You may notice he has a good number of infantry on his massed bases. Here he has placed two linear infantry stands, each 3/4 deep, on a single massed base. This allows him to use the same Austrians in early periods where they are linear infantry.

Here is another photo. The Young Guard, part of Ney’s reserve can be seen in the right foreground having just driven back the Austrian left an hour before nightfall.
