Hi, Over the last few years i've been slowly collecting an Austrian army, it all started out as a small side project because I was interested in playing Lasalle, but it inevitably has turned into a monster of a project! I have looked at lots of different rulesets, including Lasalle and General de Brigade, but of all the rules ive read, I like Black powder at the moment.... Until I find and read something else To start with, I have the German Infantry Regiments. IR 44. IR 46. IR 3 IR 8 I have lots more to show you, but my dodgy internet connection is making posting stuff very difficult today, so ill try again tomorrow Thanks for looking, Steve

Richard I like the idea that they are the underdogs, but the troops themselves were probably as good as any other in the period, but badly led on most occasions. Mainly though, i like the uniforms Steve

Here are some Hungarian infantry regiments. I have based these 8 figures to a stand to better represent their larger establishment, they count as large units in black powder. IR 2 (3 Bns) IR 33 (3 Bns) IR 51 (2 Bns) I will try to get some better pictures of my Light infantry (Jager and Grenz Bns) tomorrow. I have come to realise that moving all these small bases is going to be a bit of a drama, so I had these made for me by the fine chaps at warbases. Here is a close up, each base has an ID label, made using excel. Here is an infantry brigade with attached artillery, on their movement trays. A close up of the rear of IR 46. Ill post some more pics tomorrow, thanks for looking, Steve

Hi, Heres some artillery, I know the limbers should have the full 6 horse teams, but with 4 I can fit them in my storage trays better! This is a Cavalry battery, the main difference being that all the collars and cuffs are red, as (apparently) the Horse batteries didn't use "helpers" who had blue collars and cuffs... Here is a foot battery, or position battery, with a mix of red and blue facings. I wont post pics of all the batteries as they are pretty much the same, suffice to say I have 3 of each. Commanders Here are the 5 command bases I have completed so far, Brigade commanders 2 models and Korps commanders 3 to a base. Naturally I have labeled all the bases.. I have lots more command figures to paint up, including Archduke Charles grabbing a standard among other notables. Cheers Steve L

Hi again, Here are the Cavalry Regiments that I have completed so far. 6th Chevauxleger. The unit is divided into 2 small detachments (divisions) of 4 small squadrons each. 2nd Uhulans. Again split into 2 divisions, but considerably larger, with 3 large squadrons per division. 3rd Hussars. Again split into 2 divisions. That them all for now, I have quite a bit left to do including lots more cavalry and landwher Bns. Steve

Hi Steve,
Your figures look fantastic, thanks for posting. Looks like you are painting over a black basecoat? What paints do you use? I struggle to get uniform colours looking so vibrant over black
Regards,
Martin

Great looking figs Steve! Like the sabot type bases, very handy, I just don't like the thickness they put under the figures (a phobia of mine sorry ) Tim

Hi people! I hope you all had a good Christmas and new year? I have kicked off the 2015 painting with my Austrians. Grenz Regiment 8, in skirmish order. Grenz Regiment 13, again in skirmish order. 2 Battalions of Jagers Carneville Friekorps 2 Bns of Vienna Volunteers Prague City Landwher I have taken a few liberties with this motley lot of militia, notable are the Carneville Freikorps, they should be much smaller units. Also the Vienna volunteers have got green flags, these are actually 7YW Austrian flags, I just fancied doing something a bit different! On my painting table are 2 cavalry batteries, so updates soon! makes me want to heat up the stove melt my old heroics and ros figures down : (
wonderful stuff and the small bases makes changing formations so much like real Life formations , never liked battalions glued to one Square base as most times they never wandered about in solid blocks all the time

I like the smaller bases too, but the downside is that they are not very practical, I think im going to have problems when we use them in a game because the bases are small and fiddly, I foresee lots of broken bayonets. Im trying to think of a different way of basing them, still multiple stands, but bigger. Maybe 4 stands per unit instead of 6.
It will be alot of work, but maybe worth it in the long term. The jury is still out......

Think you will manage alright with the moving trays . But i know the problems when one cant decide what basing one will do , as one wants to base them up asap most times

Personally, I would go with the four base option. The rationale behind it is that you can form square, march column -1 base wide- or attack column -2 bases wide- all with ease and still make them pleasant enough to look at on the table.

Im thinking 4 bases per standard unit, but with 8 figs per base as per the Hungarian regiments. Lots of rebasing, but not as much as I thought. Only the "German" units will need changing, and it will standardise base sizes and leave me spare figures to form the basis of new units!

I'm tempted to say those Austrians are lame, you should sell them to me and try to do a better job the second time round. But I would be lying, what a fantastic job, as a fellow admirer of Austrians I am deeply envious and now have serious need of my own army. I only hope I do half as good a job as you.
The 3rd Hussars are amazing as are your bases.
Great job
